I am a seasoned Information and Knowledge Management professional and faculty with 15 years of experience in fostering an environment of academic excellence, developing and implementing comprehensive information management programs. As an information manager, I take pride in driving the knowledge management agenda forward, especially on matters of tacit knowledge management. Tacit knowledge (TK) is an asset that is embedded in individual experiences, thoughts, values, and beliefs. The proper understanding and management of this asset contributes immensely to effective organisational performance. To support this agenda, organisations and institutions should adopt a strategic tacit knowledge management (TKM) framework to further its implementation for productivity. Aspects of selection, recruitment of competent employees and training is key. Qualified personnel positively contribute to the growth and development of organisations, as they are capable and can provide strategic solutions, offering effective leadership to organisations of any nature. For TKM to take place, there must be technology to catalyse the process. The infrastructure for TKM should be fitted with facilities that promote research, creativity, socialisation, teamwork, design thinking as well and divergent thinking. For institutions to become knowledge organisations, there must be in place or exist a tacit knowledge management policy, knowledge management office, tacit knowledge audit, tacit knowledge awareness, tacit knowledge sharing culture – trust, collaborations (internal/external), independent decision making, communication channel, knowledge teams, and partnerships. These are crucial parameters that will enhance TKM that directly affects performance. Efficient TK use enhances competitiveness and improves organisational success. Once institutions appreciate their role in sustainable development, they will have no choice but to adopt such a framework, which will yield tremendous output not only to a nation but to the world. Intangible knowledge is just as important as tangible knowledge. Without tacit knowledge, we would not have explicit knowledge. Let us take care of it!
